Join us on Saturday evening, November 21 at 7PM Central time as we host Dr. Elly Toyoda, a world-class violinist, as she collaborates with colleagues in a dazzling production of music, dance and visual art.
Dr. Elly Toyoda, visiting assistant professor of violin at Gettysburg College will be joined by contemporary composers and artists who will share their insights with you and perform inimitable creations including a world premiere, solo violin works, a piece featuring birds and frogs from Japan and the US, and a collaborative production of music, dance and visual art.
Martin Bresnick – Composer – has been thriving as a teacher at the Yale School of Music, inspiring the students who work with him and writing a large, diverse roster of works that are admired by performers across America…music that seems at once ancient, elegiac and awesomely new.
Cherylyn Lavagnino – Choreographer – Cherylyn’s mission is to create movement that engages an audience by aligning the rigor of ballet with the humanistic performance values of contemporary dance. This unconventional use of ballet distinctively conveys moods and relationships, without the decorum that is integral to classical repertory, and without subduing the individuality of each of the dancers.
Scott Ordway – Composer – hailed as “exquisite” by The New York Times, “a marvel” by The Philadelphia Inquirer, and “an American response to Sibelius” by The Boston Globe, the music of composer Scott Ordway (b. 1984, California) has been presented by soloists, ensembles, and festivals throughout the United States, in Europe, and in Asia.
Sabina Petra – Actor, singer, composer and writer in New York City. Favorite performances include Mrs Potts in the National Tour of Beauty and the Beast, Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Prospera in The Tempest, and Elizabeth in The Crucible. She has written the musical Mercury, which will premiere soon as a Podcast in these strange new times!
Lisa Kaplan – Pianist – specializing in the performance of new work by living composers. She is also co-artistic director and a founding member of the four-time Grammy Award-winning sextet Eighth Blackbird.
Matthew Duvall – Percussionist – is co-artistic director and founding member of the four-time Grammy Award-winning sextet, Eighth Blackbird.
Dr. Elly Toyoda, a native of Osaka, Japan, has performed in major festivals in Asia, Europe, and North America. She holds her Bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory, her Master’s degree from the Yale School of Music, and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rutgers University. She graduated with the Irene Alm Memorial Prize and the Music Department Award, the school’s highest honors, in recognition of excellence in performance and scholarly research.
